Lagos, Nigeria — Hybrid Motors Nigeria has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Launch Design Shanghai to support the local production and assembly of electric vehicles in Nigeria.
The agreement, signed in Shanghai on 8 May 2026, marks an important step in Hybrid Motors Nigeria’s plan to strengthen local automotive manufacturing, expand technical capability and support Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner mobility.
Under the partnership, Hybrid Motors Nigeria and Launch Design Shanghai will work together on the development of electric vehicle production operations in Lagos and Abuja, with a combined projected annual production capacity of 70,000 vehicles at full scale.
The collaboration will support the production of Acely, Hybrid Motors Nigeria’s indigenous vehicle brand, developed for Nigerian roads, local driving conditions and the wider African market.
Hybrid Motors Nigeria’s Lagos facility, located along the Lekki-Epe corridor, is expected to serve as the company’s main production and assembly hub, with a projected annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles. Its location provides strategic access to the Lekki Deep Sea Port, creating future opportunities for distribution and export across West Africa.
The Abuja facility, planned for the Free Zone Business Area of Centenary Economic City, is expected to provide an additional annual production capacity of 20,000 vehicles. The site will support operations in Northern Nigeria and help position the company to serve markets across the Sahel corridor.
“This partnership is more than a production agreement. It is a commitment to building Nigeria’s automotive future,” said Jubril Arogundade, Chief Executive Officer of Hybrid Motors Nigeria. “With Acely, we are working to prove that world-class vehicles can be designed, engineered and assembled locally, with Nigerian customers and African roads firmly in mind.”
Launch Design Shanghai will provide technical and engineering support across vehicle design, product development, manufacturing systems and quality standards.
“Our turnkey engineering capabilities, combined with Hybrid Motors Nigeria’s understanding of the local market, create a strong foundation for success,” said Wang Xun, Chief Executive Officer of Launch Design Shanghai. “Together, we are not only building vehicles; we are helping to build an industry.”
The partnership is expected to support local job creation, workforce training, technical knowledge transfer and the development of local supply chains within Nigeria’s automotive sector.
For Hybrid Motors Nigeria, the agreement represents a practical step towards reducing reliance on imported vehicles and building a stronger local manufacturing base. It also aligns with Nigeria’s broader automotive development ambitions and the growing demand for cleaner, more efficient transport solutions.
Acely vehicles will be developed with a focus on efficiency, durability and practical usability, while maintaining standards expected from modern electric mobility platforms.
By combining local market insight with global automotive engineering experience, Hybrid Motors Nigeria is positioning itself to play a leading role in the future of electric vehicle production in Nigeria and across Africa.
